Punta Omo Morto
A striking headland on Ustica's northwestern coast offers breathtaking views of the crystal-clear sea. This wild corner of the island provides spectacular sunsets and unique vistas.
Description
Punta Omo Morto, located at the northeastern tip of Ustica Island about 40 miles from Palermo, features several attractions and points of interest nearby. To the southeast are the harbor (Cala di Santa Maria), the necropolis, and Forte Falconara, while to the west, the favorable docking area is dominated by the Spalmatore tower.
The rest of the coastline is dotted with imposing watchtowers, placed close to one another, among which the Torre dell’Omo Morto stands out. Also known as Torre Vecchia due to its antiquity, this tower was built as a defense for Capo di Leuca; after human remains were discovered nearby, it was given its new name.
The tower’s construction dates back to the mid-16th century when it was erected by Andrea Conzaga, Lord of Alessano. It featured a large circular structure and also served as a refuge for the population during raids. The lighthouse, activated in 1884, consists of a small white tower adjacent to a single-story building. The building itself is white, except for the dark lava stone base, which echoes the island’s typical hues.
Access procedure
The best view of the stunning geological ridge that characterizes Omo Morto Point is easily accessible from the parking lot at the end of the road in the old fishermen’s village.
Another wonderful way to enjoy this spectacular panorama is from the sea, by taking one of the many organized excursions offered by the various agencies in town.
